Identity politics divides us; Fiction connects us

Turkish writer Elif Shafak: The politics of fiction (TED talk)

She finishes by recalling a Sufi poem by Yunus Emre (ca. 1238 - 1320)

Come, let us all be friends for once
Let us make life easy on us,
Let us be lovers and loved ones,
The earth shall be left to no one.

Architecture is War

"Architecture and war are not incompatible.
Architecture is war
War is architecture.

I am at war with my time, with history,
with all authority that resides in fixed and frightened forms.

I am one of millions who do not fit in,
who have no home, no family,
no doctrine, nor firm place to call my own,
no known beginning or end,
no 'sacred and primoridal site'.

I declare war on all icons and finalities,
on all histories that would chain me with my own falseness,
my own pitiful fears.

I know only moments, and lifetimes that are as moments,
and forms that appear with infinite strength, then 'melt into air'.

I am an architect, a constructor of worlds,
a sensualist who worships the flesh, the melody, a silhouette against the darkening sky.
I cannot know your name. Nor can you know mine.

Tomorrow, we begin together the construction of a city."

(Lebbeus Woods; Manifesto)

Sky and Sand

In the nighttime
when the world is at it's rest
you will find me
in the place I know the best
dancin', shoutin'
flyin' to the moon
(you) don't have to worry
'cause I'll be come back soon

and we build up castles
in the sky and in the sand
design our own world
ain't nobody understand
I found myself alive
in the palm of your hand
as long as we are flyin'
All this world ain't got no end

in the daytime
you wil find me by your side
tryin' to do my best
and tryin' to make things right
when it all turns wrong
there's no fault but mine
but it won't hit hard
'cause you let me shine

and we build up castles
in the sky and in the sand
design our own world
ain't nobody understand
I found myself alive
in the palm of your hand
as long as we are flyin'
this world ain't got no end

Secrets of Adulthood

The best reading is re-reading.
Outer order contributes to inner calm.
The opposite of a great truth is also true.
You manage what you measure.
By doing a little bit each day, you can get a lot accomplished.
People don’t notice your mistakes and flaws as much as you think.
It's nice to have plenty of money.
Most decisions don't require extensive research.
Try not to let yourself get too hungry.
Even if you think they're fake, it's nice to celebrate Mother's Day and Father's Day.
If you can't find something, clean up.
The days are long, but the years are short.
Someplace, keep an empty shelf.
Turning the computer on and off a few times often fixes a glitch.
It's okay to ask for help.
You can choose what you do; you can't choose what you LIKE to do.
Happiness doesn't always make you feel happy.
What you do EVERY DAY matters more than what you do ONCE IN A WHILE.
You don't have to be good at everything.
Soap and water removes most stains.
It's important to be nice to EVERYONE.
You know as much as most people.
Over-the-counter medicines are very effective.

Failure

“I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game winning shot, and I missed. I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

The Happy Life

My friend, the things that do attain
The happy life be these, I find:
The riches left, not got with pain,
The fruitful ground; the quiet mind;

The equal friend; no grudge, no strife;
No charge of rule nor governance;
Without disease the healthy life;
The household of continuance;

The mean diet, no dainty fare;
True wisdom joined with simpleness;
The night discharged of all care,
Where wine the wit may not oppress;

The faithful wife, without debate;
Such sleeps as may beguile the night:
Content thyself with thine estate,
Neither wish death, nor fear his might.

Henry Howard, earl of Surrey (1517-1547) translation of a sonnet from Roman poet Martial's Epigrams.
